The Taming of the Shrew

چکیده
The Shrew attack is a denial of service attack wherein a rogue end-system periodically generates a high-bandwidth “spike” in order to cause TCP senders to experience loss simultaneously, synchronize their retransmissions, and ultimately experience congestive collapse. Because these spikes are periodic, overall the Shrew is a low bandwidth flow and difficult to detect and police. Currently, the best known counter-measures for Shrew attacks require modifications to the protocol stack on end-systems. In this work we show how a form of active queue management (AQM) can effectively eliminate the threat posed by Shrew attacks. We show that Differential Congestion Notification, an AQM scheme developed to improve response time of interactive traffic, “tames” the Shrew. Using a laboratory network testbed emulating traffic sources found on a campus link, we show that DCN eliminates the ill effects of a variety of Shrew attacks including a distributed attack. This study demonstrates that while Shrew attacks are indeed a real threat, such attacks are naturally countered by using AQM schemes that already improve the performance of the majority of TCP flows.

First as Farce, Then as Filmfarsi: Film Adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in Iran
This article is concerned with William Shakespeare’s famous farce play The Taming of the Shrew and its Persian adaptation as an Iranian film called Gorbe ra dame Hejleh Mikoshand in 1969. The point that informs the inquiry is the way the film departs and differs from the play in relation to the issue of women within the patriarchal society. The play and the film will be examined separately in d...

In her paper, "Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and the Tradition of Screwball Comedy," Mei Zhu argues that Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew is controversial owing to the subtlety and complexity of the text as well as its subject matter. Franco Zeffirelli's 1967 film version seems to follow the narrative structure of the original play closely while its effect is different. Through a detailed ...
متن کاملThe taming of the shrew milk teeth.
A characteristic feature of mammalian dentition is the evolutionary reduction of tooth number and replacement. Because mice do not replace teeth, here we used Sorex araneus, the common shrew, as a model to investigate the loss of tooth replacement. Historically, shrews have been reported to initiate the development of several, milk or deciduous teeth but these soon become rudimentary and only t...

Transposons are mobile genetic elements that can be harmful for the host when mobilized. However, they are also genomic reservoirs for novel genes that can be evolutionarily beneficial. There are many examples of domesticated transposases, which play important roles in the hosts. In most cases domesticated transposases have lost their endonuclease activities and the hosts utilize their DNA-bind...
متن کاملTaming the Shrew - Resolving Structural Heterogeneities with Hierarchical CPNs
Model transformations play a key role in the vision of ModelDriven Engineering (MDE) whereby the overcoming of structural heterogeneities, being a result of applying different meta-modeling constructs for the same semantic concept, is a challenging, recurring problem, urgently demanding for reuse of transformations. In this respect, an approach is required which (i) abstracts from the concrete ...
